Mud, Muck, and More

I just can't take it anymore. I went to Savannah for a couple of days and it rained every day I was gone. Now Onyx has bottle jaw too. I wormed her with Ivomec after she kidded 4/27 and have had her on herbal weekly since. Magnum is sick again. He was better before I left and now we're back to square one.

I left a bag of potatoes I'd harvested on the floor in the kitchen. They decided to rot while I was gone and stain the wood floor. It's just lovely.

Oh and the Air Conditioner died. $4800.

Just shoot me.

  1. Kristen, sorry about your goat troubles. We had that happen a couple of years ago. We finally gave sub Q shots (1 cc per 40#) of Ivomec plus every ten days, three times. It worked and we haven't had too many problems since.
    The wet weather doesn't help.

    1. I've been giving Ivomec orally to the affected individuals. 1cc/ 50#. The buck has had 2 doses. Onyx just one on Thursday. I have been considering trying Cydectin.

Things have just been so soggy here all summer. My grass squishes when I walk on it. The goats are fed good quality hay up off the ground, but they're still managing to pick up parasites.

I listed all the dam raised babies for sale since they're healthy. I want them gone before they wind up sick too!

    2. I use to do orally as well. I read a really good article about wormers with goats and sometimes if they have a high worm load and you do it orally it kills them to quickly and causes bleeding. I am trying to find the link but having no luck. Since then I have been doing shots when using ivomec plus.
This year we have been using Panacur which is oral.
I hope things are better with your goats!

  2. Kristen,
I am so sorry. Sometimes especially on a farm everything goes wrong at once ! A month ago my really expensive matches-the-professional-stove refrigerator stopped working. We had difficulty finding an electrolux certified technician. The first man came out to determine what was wrong, but never called us back afterward. Meanwhile we have no frij. We are eating out of a freezer, and have to finish milk yogurt and fruit each day. This is difficult with a large family and grocery stores 20 plus miles from here. My ketchup grew mold in the frij which was 60 degrees even with a block of ice from the freezer added every four hours. ! Finally we found another technician but he had to order $800. worth of parts and it would be $600.labor to fix it. (Electrolux recommended them.) Then, our golden retriever became ill. A fortune at the vet and he could not stay in our kennel. We set him up in the garage and he trashed it. The wet weather caused some irritation of his skin below his fur and then he had maggots on his skin ! I take such good care of my animals ! I was mortified. We had to give him shots, steroids and antibiotics by mouth, and despite being shaved like a pig, he needed a daily Hibiclens bath. Don't forget the expensive probiotics !
Then two additional horses arrived. Managing four horses on top of Benjamin was tough, and then I had to order their immunizations. They need everything ! Then I noticed skin issues recurring on Sable the Cocker Spaniel. More baths, and a dectomax shot for awhile as per the vet. By then it was 94 degrees outside and now that I have horses, I have horseflies here ! The alpacas are looking disapprovingly at the horses.
Sometimes the bills and the challenges are downright depressing, and then other times, I wonder why everyone doesn't raise animals.
And about your oak floors......let me tell you that this week, a spray bottle of Simple Green turned over. It stains oak floors too !
Believe me, it will all get better. I have been there, and it always straightens out eventually ! Best wishes.

    1. Oh my, I don't know how you are managing without a fridge. I'm so sorry to hear of all your troubles too! I completely understand how you feel about your dog. I take really good care of all my animals and it just kills me that they're still getting sick. Hang in there and I'll do the same.

    2. The frij was finally fixed at a cost of $1600. (Everything inside it is new, and is a sealed system) We existed for a month by using the giant freezer in another part of the house, we have for frozen food. Also, we made some big blocks of ice by filling clean milk jugs with water. We would exchange the melted ice jug in the broken frij about every four hours with a frozen solid one. This allowed us to use the "ice box principle" and keep some things in the non working refrig. We were able to keep eggs, strawberries, lettuce, for a day or so, as long as things were consumed quickly. We also only cooked food that would be consumed within one day. It was a pain, but we did it. See, it always does get better. Hope your days are getting better and your animals are well.
I also pride myself on great animal care. As a nurse I pride myself on giving a great injection. Yesterday when I gave a new horse an intramuscular injection, he moved slightly, and now has a lump where leakage must have occurred within the injection site. Although I know this will likely be absorbed within the next day or two, I still need to watch it, and I feel very badly about it. There will always we times where our animals are sick or where we miss something, sometimes subtle. Take good care.

  3. Kristin, I'm so sorry. It does seem to happen like this though. So many good days, then here comes trouble! I've gone through the bottle jaw and it's awful. I thought one of the little troplets had it but maybe not now. I hope you get her cleared up and it dries up and you get the AC fixed. And just be glad you don't live in Death Valley. 128 there. And I was born out there. My mom just said when we moved to Trona, where I was born, it was 120. But it cooled off at night. I hope you had a good time in Sav. One of my favorite places.

    1. They are coming Monday to replace the unit. I would die if I lived in Death Valley! Although, it's a dry heat. It hasn't been too hot here but the 75 degree dew points are killing me. My deck is growing moss and the flies....oh my, the flies...

  4. I wish you lived closer. My husband could've done you a/c for half that price :/
Hope your goaties get better soon. I've had to clean my goat & chicken pens daily to keep the flies from aggravating my animals. It quit raining so much here and now it's hot! My pool stays green, my garden wilts, I wilt LOL! Anyway, things will get better.
I would love to see Savannah. Hope you had fun while you were there :)

  6. Have you tried Dectomax yet? It's good, but not on milking does. It's got a 30 day milk withdrawal time. So I use it on all the others and sheep if I need to. And it's what my vet said to use on Barber Pole warms.

    1. I haven't tried that one. I'm going to give Cydectin a try. I gave Onyx Ivomec and I hope that will clear her up. Cydectin is not labeled for goats (honestly, what is?), but the label says there is no milk withdrawal time in cows.

    2. I prefer Dectomax when possible because it doesn't burn when injected the way that other ivermectin related drugs do. Look up Dectomax which is also known as Doramectin. Best wishes.

  7. I give all my wormers orally. I did one time do an injection of something because a really good goat friend said it would work faster that way.

But I like Cydectin the best because there is no milk withdrawal. It's the nastiest stuff ever, so hard to believe. But I do usually give it at leat 3 days before drinking the milk again, if I have t use it.

So how are your goaties today? Any better yet? All this rain is not helping at all, I know. It's either too wet or too dry. I hope all is well, for you and the goats.
